Kemp Nixon
Kemp Battle Nixon, the eldest child of Alfred and Iola Nixon, poses for this photograph taken around 1902. Kemp was born on August 12, 1883 at Rock Springs Campground in eastern Lincoln County. His parents named him after Kemp Plummer Battle, President of the University of North Carolina from 1876-1891. Kemp was matriculated from the University of North Carolina, and received his law degree from Trinity College, now Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina in 1907. He served on the board of directors of the University of North Carolina for thirty years; was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton; served as Judge of the Recording Court, Court Attorney, and President of the Lincoln and District Bar Associations; was a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1931 to 1935; and, was Chairman of the Lincoln County Board of Education. Kemp also served as director of and bank attorney for First National Bank of Lincolnton, and was member of Lincoln Lodge No. 137, A.F. & A.M. and the Oasis Temple of the Shrine in Charlotte.
