S. Harris Hopkins
S. Harris Hopkins, who was raised in Maryland, lived in Baltimore during the Civil War. He married three times. He and his first wife lived in Baltimore. She and her twin sons died shortly after she gave birth. His second wife was Sue C. Jenkins of Lincolnton. She died in the 1880s without issue. In 1890 he married Carrie L. Saunders in Hagood, South Carolina. Both spent the rest of their lives in Lincolnton. They had two daughters who grew up in Lincolnton. They were Harrie Lee, who married first James Wharton and later Thomas E.L. Lipsey, and Louise. Mrs. Carrie Hopkins remained in Lincolnton after the death of Harris Hopkins in 1916. She was an outspoken woman with considerable business ability. At her death in 1934, she was one of Lincolnton’s best known citizens.
